Southern Cross Dental offer several brands of anti-snoring appliances.
1. The EMA® (Elastic Mandibular Advancement)
Two clear splints cover the teeth and are connected by straps which are available in different lengths and rigidities, enabling up to 36 different levels of mandibular advancement, which allows the clinician to adjust the level and strength of protrusion to optimise efficacy while promoting comfortable use.
The EMA® does not interfere with mouth breathing in patients who experience nasal obstruction. Shorter straps are used to achieve greater levels of mandibular advancement until symptoms improve. Patients have some degree of lateral and/or protrusive movement with this device. The straps are strong and durable in function, enabling the use of this device in patients with some degree of parafunction.
As it is tooth-supported, patients need sound anterior and posterior teeth and restorations, free of any periodontal involvement, and with adequate undercuts to promote retention in the mouth.
2. Silensor-SL
This Silensor-SL uses two transparent or tinted splints (one in each arch) to protrude the mandible and counteract constriction of the oropharynx by the tongue. The mandible is located either in a pre-set position or by two semi-rigid connectors that allow some mandibular movement for added patient comfort. Relying on at least eight sound natural teeth per arch for support, the Silensor-SL is a conservative form of mandibular advancement device that is usually well tolerated by the patient. The degree of mandibular advancement can be varied by changing the lateral connectors, allowing titration of the appliance to achieve effective reduction of snoring and other symptoms.
3. Moses®
The Moses® device is another option in oral-appliance therapy for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) for mild to moderate cases. The device combines an open anterior design with mandibular advancement, which protrudes the tongue, and reduces obstruction of the airway. Patients can also talk, drink, open their mouth, and close their lips while wearing the appliance, making the Moses® a comfortable option.
